Years of smiling and frowning can cause wrinkles to form on your face. Other factors can contribute to deeper wrinkles such as sun exposure and dry skin. If you want to relax some of the lines on your face and appear more youthful, but you don’t want to undergo invasive procedures, you may be interested in learning more about Xeomin. Xeomin treatments are one of our injectable wrinkle solutions at BeYOUtiful Anti-Aging Studio.

What Is Xeomin?

Xeomin is an injection of Botulinum toxin A that is used cosmetically to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is commonly used for the horizontal lines on the forehead, crow’s feet, lines around the mouth, drooping eyebrows, and frown lines. It works best on dynamic wrinkles (those caused by expression) rather than static wrinkles (those that are present even with a neutral face.)  At our studio, we specialize in treating wrinkles on the forehead and glabella as well as around the eyes and mouth, and we offer services for lifting and shaping the eyebrows using Xeomin.

How Does Xeomin Work?

The active ingredient in Xeomin, Botulinum toxin A, is a neuromodulator. When injected into the muscles of the face, it is able to block nerve signals that tell these muscles to move. By reducing muscle movement in key areas such as the forehead, around the mouth, or around the eyes, the skin in these areas is no longer able to crinkle or fold. When done by a licensed physician, these wrinkles will disappear for several months until the effects of the treatment begin to fade.

What Sets Xeomin Apart From Similar Products?

You may recognize the active ingredient, Botulinum toxin A, from other similar products on the market such as Botox. While featuring the same active ingredient, each of these products has different uses and merits, and the decision of which is best for you should be discussed thoroughly with your doctor. At our studio, we can discuss the uses and benefits of each along with your personal goals for wrinkle reduction. The main difference is that Xeomin is a “naked injectable” without some of the additional ingredients found in Botox.

What Does “Naked Injectable” Mean?

Occasionally, frequent users of Botulinum toxin type A products can develop antibodies that cause the product to be less effective. While this is rare and poor results are more likely to be the result of low doses or improper injection, the complexing proteins present in other solutions may increase the risk of the creation of these antibodies. Xeomin is sometimes called the “Naked Injectable” because it doesn’t contain any complexing proteins. In addition to Botulinum toxin type A, Xeomin only includes two other ingredients, human albumin, and sucrose. It may also be a better choice for those with allergies to any added ingredients in similar products.

How Long Does Xeomin Last?

Once Xeomin is injected into your muscles, it can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks to start to have an effect. Once the effects are at their peak, you can expect your Xeomin treatments to last between 3 and 4 months. Some of our patients want one treatment to help them look their best for a special event while others are interested in regular appointments. Xeomin can be injected again after the effects have worn off. If you want to maintain your youthful appearance, you may need to schedule 3 or more appointments each year.

What Makes Someone a Good Candidate for Xeomin Treatments?

If you have frown lines or other dynamic wrinkles on your face, you may be a good candidate for Xeomin treatments. The best candidates are those who understand how Xeomin works and what to expect. Xeomin is not a permanent solution for wrinkles but it may be ideal for those who wish to avoid surgical options.

You may not be a good candidate for Xeomin treatments if you have had allergic reactions to other similar products or if you have known allergies to any of the ingredients in Xeomin. It is also not recommended for people under the age of 18 or women who are pregnant or nursing.

What to Expect From Your Xeomin Injections

Xeomin injections are a fast in-and-out procedure that typically takes less than 30 minutes. You will not need anesthesia, but you may ask for a topical anesthetic if you wish. During our consultation, we will decide how many units of Xeomin to use for your treatment area. When you come for your injections, we will gently cleanse your face and then inject the solution into your desired areas.

You will be able to return to your day right after injections. Xeomin has no downtime so it is safe to go back to work, drive, and do all of your regular activities.

What Are the Side Effects of Xeomin?

As with any drug, side effects are possible and you should always discuss all of the risks with your doctor before having the treatment done. The most common side effects reported during Xeomin trials were mild redness, soreness, and swelling at the injection site. Another common side effect was headaches. Other side effects can include muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, and allergic reactions. Having your treatment done by a licensed physician with thorough knowledge of facial muscle structure is essential for avoiding more serious side effects.
